Lions roar into town
Lions from all around the southern and central North Island are to gather in Ohakune this weekend, for the annual Lions District 202D conventiori. More than 500 service club members and their partners are to meet in the town to discuss issues ranging from club membership to saving the planet, from helping children learn skills to make the right choices to helping old people through their latter years. District 202D includes about 60 clubs in an area from New Plymouth to Ashurst and Foxton to Ruapehu. A special train from Stratford will bring almost 300 of the Lions to the convention, being hosted by the Ruapehu Lions Club, with the venue being the Ruapehu College. They arrive at about 6pm Friday, with the official opening to be held at 7.30pm. This starts with a Maori powhiri, followed by the traditional Lions flag ceremony. Special guests at the conference will be welcomed there, including International Lions Club director Garnet Davis, from Melfort Saskatchewan Canada. Guest speaker at the opening will be Keith Evans, executive for the Liquor Advisory council. Early risers will be bussed up the Ohakune Mountain Road to a special breakfast at the Turoa Ski Resort cafe. The conference' s business session starts later, at 9.30am. The Lion's partners will be taken to see the Kaimanawa wild horses as an altemative to the business session. A cabaret is to be held Saturday night. On Sunday morning a re-dedication service will be held at the Maungarongo Marae.
