Fire costs

Who pays for fighting fires? That question was asked at the Ruapehu District Council's February meeting, after a devastating fire in the Tongariro Forest earlier in the week. The Council heard that the council is liable for the first $5000 of the costs of fighting a bush fire, and 5 per cent of the costs thereafter. Cr Turley said a fire that got out of control could

end up costing the council millions. There was some discussion on fire permits for people lighting burn-off fires, with the view expressed that tougher permit laws would not stop fires getting out of control. "Even if a person does not need a fire permit, they are still obliged to take proper care to control the fire," said fire officer John Murrihy.
