Sports to pay for grounds

All sports groups which use council reserves will contribute towards their maintenance, following the Ruapehu District Council's decision to adopt a policy covering recreation reserves. The new policy, which has taken several months to settle, several public meetings and been the subject of several council officer's reports, will recover a small proportion of the maintenance costs of reserves. Mayor Garrick Workman cited a rugby

club, for example, where players would pay about 49 cents per game each. Cr Stuart Shaw asked how much the development of the policy had cost so far and how much money would be generated.

He said he was concerned that the exercise was a waste of time and money. General manager Cliff Houston said the council needed a uniform policy so that officers could make a reasoned decision.

Cr Graeme Cosford said he accepted the need for the policy but was concerned about the extra costs for small organisations. He suggested the situation be reviewed in 12 months time.
