Problems with water plant

Drinkers would probably not notice but Ohakune 's new water treatment plant is not operating properly. The main sand filters and the ultra-violet treatment equipment is working, but the diatomatious earth (DE) filters are not operating because of a problem with the pipes. Air is thought to be getting into the pipes leading to the plant, causing hammering and, while all other equipment can cope, the DE filters can not handle the extra pressure from the hammering. The contractor, Water Systems Technologies, has the responsibility to find and fix the problem.

Area Engineer Don Sattler said the council had withheld part of the payment for the system, until the fault is fixed. Mr Sattler said the water quality was still quite acceptable because the main equipment is operating and that very few people would notice the difference. He said the DE filters further refined the S water quality, filtering out the finest particles to give the best water quality possible. "If nobody was told 1 (about the fault) they wouldn't know any different." The contractor was due I to run further tests to fmd the cause of the hammering today and tomorrow.
