Raetihi boy rides for rescue

Joe was with a party of 100 children, including many locals, on a Tarawera Trust trip into the Manganui a Te Ao River area on a tree planting expedition when another lad was involved

in an accident. "Joe rode his horse to Papatipu, to a nearby farm to raise the alarm," said the nurse. "He made the trip in half the normal time." He then rode to the nurse 's home, nearby,

and the two tramped back to the site of the accident. By then a rescue helicopter had flown into the site and evacuated the boy. He had suffered a serious injury when they were cutting stakes for

the trees being planted, said the nurse. "Joe's ride - he knows the area really well - saved the boy. If he hadn't acted so responsibly the rescue may not have happened," she said. "I think he deserves recognition." Raetihi youngster Joe Metekingi deserves a medal, according to a local nurse who wants to stay anonymous.
