byDavtoofRIC The biggest yarding for some months and strong prices marked the last Waimarino stock sale, held in Raetihi on 14 January. Over two hundred visitors from Wanganui, Hawkes Bay, Taihape, Waitara and Taumarunui came to sell and buy, with the best prices being reached for sheep and older cattle. Ewe lambs were the most popular sellers, according to Bernice Frost of Waimarino Livestock, particularly with Hawkes Bay Buyers who paid around $30 a lamb. A pen of 39 two-tooth wethers entered by Chambers Farm reached the top price of $59 which compares well with the average of $33 for wether lambs. However, works buyers did spend as much as $38 for some wether lambs. By far the strongest selling though were the good condition wether hoggets, which sold for between $40$50. Cattle prices were very good this sale, the older cattle particularly Teaching the best prices. Top prices for Friesan-cross ($840) and Angus ($752) were both paid for cattle from the Kavanagh Trust of Makakihi, described by one observer as "The best beasts among a topquality mix."
