First Waiouru board's meeting defended

• "Independent Voice" accuses the Waiouru Community Board of conducting a farcical meeting. This could not be further from the truth. It was the first business meeting of the new board of eight which consisted of four new

members. Most of the business had been brought up by the previous board and naturally the corporate knowledge of previous members, in this case Councillor Vine and Councillor Rodger

was sought listened to and was of great assistance to the new board enabling us to make an informed decision. It should be noted that the board has no statutory power and all our decisions are in the form of recommendations to the Ruapehu District Council. "Independent Voice" has been selective in criticisms. Resealing and lighting was raised with the whole community in mind. Should all our money be spent on resealing Rangipo Street for the use of heavy trucks at the expense of our rate-payers? I think not. It was decided that street lights were needed not only in Ngaruahoe Street West but also in front of the houses on State Highway 49 and on the walkway between the Vege Barn and the Camp housing area. Safety is of concern to the Board. The assertion that servicing of Ruanui Street sections was deleted from the 93/94 Annual Plan to keep accommodation at a premium and rental prices up is scurrilous and pure conjecture on behalf of "Independent Voice". A developer would be most welcome to make a proposal to Council. The Board has recommended that 'All' streets leading off State Highway 1 in Waiouru Township have their speeds reduced from 70km/h to 50km/h to

help ensure the safety of our residents and children. The Board is very conscious of accountability and welcomes all residents to our open public meetings. "Independent Voice" does not appear to be so conscious of the fact otherwise a real name, would have appeared at the end of the letter. Have the courage of your convictions.
