Waiouru welcomes

By

Jan

Savell

Waiouru's Information and Drop In Centre opened its doors to welcome families new to Waiouru for the first time last week. The free morning tea and chat session is the brainchild of committee member Maggie Voigt. "I remember what it was like when I first arrived in Waiouru. I was floundering around for ages. I didn't even know when the garbage was collected for six weeks!" said Mrs Voigt when asked why she wanted to get involved. Maggie has now been in Waiouru for 12 months and has taken over the

organisation of the 'Welcome to Waiouru' morning tea. Each fortnight the names and addresses the of families who have just moved into the community are divided between her team of "door-knock-ers" and each woman is visited and invited to attend the next morning tea. "The response has been very positive. I think all the women we visited turned up today - I've been very impressed with the success". "We offer rides and give the newcomers our phone numbers. The personal approach is what makes the difference. We advertised but I don't think

people know what it is about yet." The next 'Welcome to Waiouru' morning tea will be on 14 January. To find out more call in to the Information and Drop In Centre or telephone 3876 644 between 10am and noon.
