Council lawn contracts questioned

Setting contracts for council work in an election year may not be fair on a newly elected council, according to W aimarino C ommunity Board member Bob Peck. He was commenting on a report on the lawn mowing contracts in Raetihi and Ohakune.

"People in both towns are wondering why the mowing blades have to be set at a certain level and can't be changed," he said at the board' s meeting. He was told, via a report from the technical services director Bruce Dobson, that the twoyear mowing contracts

had started on 1 October and that the contract specifications cannot be altered until their renewal in two years' time. At present the main contractor is the council' s Operations Business Unit.
