Unemployment & fairness
• A comment on the current, local unemployment situation: we are all aware of the fact that unemployment is quite high in our area. But how many of us are really worried about it and how many of us are too greedy to care? A situation which comes to mind is (as has
been widely advertised): Contorta contracts are at present, "up for grabs". Fair enough, the keyword is "grabs". At the moment there are several local contractors putting their tenders in to the appropriate authorities - should one of these win a contract the chances are that they will employ some of the unemployed youth off our streets. Therefore creating jobs and perhaps keeping some of undesirable element off the streets and out of trouble. On the other hand, there are some people who tender for contracts who hold regular jobs. Should they be lucky enough to win a contract, their regular jobs are held open for them: one with the local pulp mill and another holding a job with Serco as well as being a member of the district council (so that would mean having 3 jobs - some of us are so lucky!) With attitude such as these is it any wonder our unemployment figures do not decrease?
