• Police would like to hear from anyone who may have cashed a cheque with the name 'P.H. ! Hobson' in recent weeks. The request follows an incident where a young female tried to use a cheque book under that name on 19 November. Police said it appears the cheque book is stolen. • A 22 year-old male smashed the front window of Ohakune New World at 9.30pm on Wednesday night. He stole a quantity of wine (later recovered). Police said he was observed by a large number of local people, who chased and caught the offender. He is to appear in court on 17 December. "He was apprehended thanks to the excellent response of members of the public," said | Waimarino police sergeant Bob Evans. ! • Later on Wednesday night thieves broke into the depot of King Country Energy and stole electric cable, a chainsaw and some electric hand tools. Police enquiries are continuing. • Knic Knacs second hand shop in Clyde Street suffered broken windows on Friday night. No attempt was made to gain entry to the shop. • Police are calling for information from the public on cannabis growers. Sergeant Bob Evans said now is the planting season for growers and he would like to hear from anyone who has seen any 1 suspicious activity, such as cars parked in odd places or people going into the bush in strange locations. He said cannabis growing leads to all sorts of related problems including the theft of electric fencing equipment and the like. That in turn has caused farmers problems with stock wandering where they shouldn't.
