Council not consulting
By Tamaupoko Korero - Te Reo Irirangi A well attendod Tamaupoko Trust hui was held recently at Tirorangi Pa, Karioi, on 18 November. The people of Karioi welcomed peoples from the awa and maunga rohe onto their marae in typical local weather - fine and warm in the moming, wet and cold in the aftemoon. A delegate from Waiouru Marae attended the hui, bringing with him korero on the aspirations of Waiouru people concerning their marae. The Tamaupoko expressed appreciation of the approach being taken by Waiouru marae. The hui was a long one
with reports being received from many subcommittees including a detailed report on Forestry Development proposals for the rohe. Concern was expressed on the implementation of the Resource Management Act 1991 by the Regional and district councils. Some said that the consultation with tangata whenua required of the councils had not taken place leaving the legality of planning consents, and even district council annual plans, in question. It was noted that this was a situation that could be contested in court. Tamaupoko had
written to the four district councils it covers - Ruapehu, Stratford, Rangatikei and Wanganui - advising of its iwi authority role but as yet has only received replies from the Wanganui council. However, there was discussion on the excellent past record of the Ruapehu District Council in regard to consultation with iwi groups. The hui concluded with a decision to form a special working party to put together a restructured package for the Tamaupoko Trust based on resource orientated ecbnomic development plans.
