Narrow escape on Mtn Rd
Three local men had a narrow escape from serious injury or even death on Monday 16 November when their Ruapehu District Council truck, loaded with road metal and a 1,000-litre water tank, lost its brakes on the Ohakune Mountain Road's notorious hairpin bend and crashed through the barrier to roll several times before coming to rest against some trees about 60 feet below the road. All three occupants
from the badly damaged truck - Steve Herewini of Ohakune and Darren McDonnell and Clinton Bishop, both of Raetihi sustained only minor injuries and were able to free themselves and scramble back to the road. The reason for the brake failure has yet to be determined but it is thought to be a broken air hose ... all three men heard a loud hiss as they approached the corner but
couldn't slow the truck further as they were already in the lowest gear available. Steve Herewini, who was sitting in the middle of the cab between driver Clinton Bishop and Darren McDonnell said that he thought he was facing death as the truck went through the barrier. The accident happened at 11.30am and the truck was hauled back to the road at 5pm by two of the Army's heavy recovery vehicles from Waiouru.
