Last post at Whakapapa

King Country Energy chairperson Ken Street will do the honours at 'a last pole' ceremony on Mt Ruapehu on Saturday 28 November. The pole is the last of an overhead line that previously supplied the Top of the Bruce from the Chateau Tongariro level. King Country Energy replaced the overhead

line with an underground cable last summer, but the early arrival of snow meant the poles could not be removed until spring. The replacement cable allows more electricity to be delivered to the Whakapapa skifields, to cater for increased lift capacity and it will also lower line losses. The project turned out

to be a three-way exercise involving the board, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts and the Department of Conservation, who used the opportunity to underground power in the Whakapapa Village. The end result is a much more environmen-

tally friendly supply of electricity to the Whakapapa Village and skifields, as well as offering a more secure service. The last pole will be lifted from its position using a Hiab crane and the hole remaining then filled with sterilised soil.
