Road closed debate

by

Tamaupoko

i Korero

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the closure of the Mangapurua Valley road by DoC to vehicle and horse access. The closure has particularly annoyed local hunters, both Maori and Pakeha. The area has been used as an important source of

kai, especially as rural areas have been hard hit by the recession. Many iwi hui are kept going by hunting trips into the valley. New information that the Department of Conservation has issued a commercial hunting licence to a hunting operation has upset locals. "I may be wrong, but I think we can now see the motivation behind DoC's road closure," said an iwi spokesperson. The Mangapurua is of spiritual significance to Maori landowners and also many local European people whose forebears

settled in the area. The Whanganui Whare Wananga Trust has put in a Treaty of Waitangi claim for the area. The trust is the body designate by the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board in negotiations with DoC over additions or alterations to the Whanganui River National Park.
