Te Wahi Huihuinga o Nga Tamariki hosted the annual sports day for local kohanga reo in Waiouru last Wednesday. Children from six different kohanga reo gathered for a fun day to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the kohanga reo movement. Children from Waiouru Primary School's Maori club and the enrichment class performed
a powhiri to welcome the visitors. Ms Clare Twomey's class helped with the day's activities, organising the programme with a big emphasis on participation and fun. Mokai Patea, Te Whakaue o Tamatea, Te Puawai o te Kakano and Tenei Whakatipuranga came from Taihape and joined with Ngati Uenuku Tuatahi from Raetihi and Te Wahi Huihuinga o Nga
Tamariki from Waiouru. The sports day provided an opportunity for children, parents and kaiako to get together. "All the kids get shy. Even our ones," said Mrs Tere Gilbert from Waiouru. "That's fine. We have lots of little prizes and everyone gets something". And what did the children think of it all? "Kapai!"
