Power cut-offs up
King Country Energy has experienced its highest level of customer disconnections for nonpayment in 17 monthsand does not really know why. It is in complete con-
trast to recent months where the downward trend has been satisfying, according to general manager Peter Till. He told the October board meeting that 56 people were disconnected
in Taumarunui in September, 22 in Turangi and 13 in Ohakune. The board now has about one percent of its domestic customers on pre-pay meters but, according to secretarytreasurer Norm Annand, this is a long way behind Britain, where seven per cent pay for their electricity in this way. Last year the total number of September
disconnections was just over 40. Chairman Ken Street suggested it could be because people had got used to the computerised telephone system which alerts customers when their power is to be disconnected for non-pay-ment, but Mr Annand said he believes it is because the list has simply got bigger.
