Ski Ruapehu this summer!

Skiing until 10 January! Ruapehu looks set to be the place to visit this summer if plans from a number of tourist operators are any indication. Turoa Ski Resort is opening every weekend until Christmas and then they will open every day from Boxing Day through to 10 January. Whakapapa is staying open until 15 November, then opening their lifts for sightseers from December, with lifts operating for skiers also. Why the big deal? There is so much snow - that's why. And Ruapehu ski people are shouting it from the rooftops. "I can't believe people every where don't know yet - so I'm telling everybody I see," said Junction Ski Shop proprietor Linda Newton. ' "Lots of people just don't know how fantastic spring - and now summer - skiing can be. Just because it's not cold in the cities they think there's no snow on the mountain, yet there is still almost four metres of base!" Pinatubo may have been a pain in the Phillipines - but for skiers the cloud has had a silver lining!
