Chimney warning

By

David of RIC

With the large number of chimney fires this winter in Raetihi, Neil McLean of the Raetihi Volunteer Fire Brigade offers three tips on avoiding future fires. Most important is to know the danger of fire in a chimney. The burning soot, ash and debris can cause fires if it lands on nearby roofs. "Then it's the neighbourhood gone up in flames," said Mr McLean. # Secondly, chimneys should be cleaned at least

twice a year, once belore use then to remove caked soot and bird nests and again during the cold months. Thirdly the shaft of the chimney and the area around the firebox should be checked. Cracks in a chimney or a blocked flue allow sparks to get into ceilings and walls •Where they can burn unnoticed. It is common for a roof to be set alight in this way, Mr McLean commcnts, and putting it out is very difficult and damaging to the house.
