McDonough,
Anthony Bowsher and Lee Anne Pasquill Last Wednesday 23 September a group of 45 students and kaumatua travelled to Hastings to support Che Wilson and Pikimai Mareikura at the National Korimako Speech Competition. Che, who won the Regional Maori Speech
Competition for Seniors, spoke on Wednesday and Pikimai who won the Junior section spoke on Thursday. The 35 students who supported Che and Pikimai are from the Maori Culture Group and they put a lot of time into practising singing to tautoko the two speakers.
This was the first time Ruapehu College has been represented at a national speech competition. Mathex On Thursday 24 September 32 students travelled to Wanganui to compete in the annual Mathex Competition held at the Memorial Hall. This year's group was much smaller than last year's group of 64 students due to the Korimako Speech finals being held at the same time.
The event is a general maths competition which begins with the Form Three level and continues through to the Form Seven level ending with an awards presentation. After the hard-work put into the competition it was generally felt that students needed something substantial to eat and a special trip was made to McDonalds and students returned home around 11pm. A special thanks went to all those involved in providing transport.
