Busy Badminton

OHAKUNE BADMINTON CLUB PRESIDENT Ohakune Badminton Club staged its annual tournament on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September. Thanks to the Junction Ski Shop who sponsored the tournament and all those who entered and made it the successful and enjoyable weekend that it was. Thanks also to Lois Lind, Shirley Shields, Ned Wanoa, Jocelyn Cranston and Kenneth Young for doing the draws and keeping the day running smoothly; the Lind and Cranston girls for keeping all the hungry and thirsty players satisfied with food and hot drinks, Sheryl Wilson for an excellent meal from Upstairs Downstairs on Saturday night and indeed the whole committee for help and support organising the weekend; New World Supermarket and Phillip Sutton for setting up tables and chairs. Players travelled to Ohakune from Wanganui, Waiouru, Taihape, Taumarunui, Palmerston North and Wellington to play. Play started on Friday night at 7pm with A Reserve and B Grade singles. Some top quality badminton was played and was at times nail-biting to watch. Saturday morning was an early start at 8.30am

with C and D grades commencing their games. Singles, Doubles and Combines. A Reserve and B grades were back at 10.30am to play Doubles and Combines. C and D grade games were all fairly even which made for close games and some excellent Badminton to watch. 'A' Reserve and B graders battled it out with all games being hard played to the bitter end. A two-draw raffle was run on the day. First draw: meat and veges - Dood Greenless, Taihape. Second draw: fruit and vegetables - Lois Lind, Ohakune. The $100 raffle which the Badminton Club was running with proceeds going to the Waimarino Rest Home was won by Beedees. Profits from the tournament will be donated to the Ohakune Squash Club facility. Hopefully the successful weekend will enable us to make a handy donation.
