Dancer returns from Spain

By

Ruapehu College old girl Lisa Norling has just returned from performing at the New Zealand pavilion at Expo in Spain. Lisa, who now lives in Wellington, was one of five dancers from the Footnote Dance Company asked to perform at the pavilion. "We spent only twelve minutes a day dancing because it was so hot," she said. New Zealand's was the only pavilion catering for the passing crowds with an outside stage. The Maori concert group who performed on the outside stage in 47 degree Celcius heat could only last fifteen minutes. As a result of that the company had to shorten one of its routines by half, Lisa said. The company only performs work choreographed by New Zealanders. The dances they performed were centred on the things typically NZ, " like hokey

pokey ice cream, toi tois, pohutukawa trees". Lisa has been dancing since she was eight and now works full time for Footnotes eight months

of the year. During the other four months she freelances; doing TV adverts, fashion shows and modelling. The thing that struck

Lisa about Seville was the architecture which she said was amazing. "We saw quite a lot of Seville but didn't have time to see any more of

Spain." The dancers stayed in a village about twenty minutes outside the city limits, with a lot of other NZ performers.
