The Listener Women's Book Festival started this week and runs through to Sunday. There are over 95 titles this year in six sections. Wendy Hubbard, Ohakune Librarian, says the library has about 13 of the festival's titles which will be promoted this week. Well known NZ author Tessa Duder will visit Taumarunui and Taupo this week to promote the two books she has in the Festival. Ms Duder's book 'Songs For Alex' was selected as a Top-20 title for the book week. She will be at the Turaki Primary School on Wednesday September 16 at 1pm, and the Taupo Public Library at 7.30pm that same day. The festival is organised each year by a national committee of women prominent in the book trade. This year a committee of booksellers and a teacher selected the Top20 books for the catalogue.
U.K author Betty Fry, now residing at Owhango, is releasing a collection of short stories, entitled 'Sweet and Sour' to coincide with the festival, although she isn't officially part of it this year. Mrs Fry, along with three other women, wrote a tribute to the New Zealand Women Writers Society. She will be doing readings from her new book at the Taumarunui, Raetihi and Ohakune libraries later this month. National organiser Penny Hansen is keen to liaise with writers' groups to organise visits by festival authors next year. She can be contacted at ph. 09-630 7699.
