Possum plan

During June and July, the Manawatu/Wanganui Regional Council carried out a Possum Control Operation for the Army Training Group at Waiouru. The areas treated were remnant bush sites in the southern half of the Army Training Group Training Area. The majority of the areas were

aerially treated with 1080 poison. Sensitive areas bordering onto farmland were controlled by hand-laying of poison and shooting. During the operation all attempts were made to ensure that the Kaimanawa wild horses were not put at risk of accidental poisoning and Turn to paae 7

From page 5 subsequent inspections have confirmed that this was effective. Monitoring of areas following the poison operation indicated that the operation was successful and that local possum population levels were not as high as originally perceived. Further control work is planned for rabbits and possums around the Waiouru Camp perimeter and Training Area for next year.
