Skiers hope for great spring
Ruapehu's skifields are anticipating the best spring ever this year. Turoa has recorded most snow since the opening of the ski area in 1978, reports Turoa' s Marketing Manager, Nancy van der Laan. The mountain has experienced snow storm af-
ter snow storm since July, with the fields suffering many closed days and days with limited facilities operating. Extra man and machine hours have been needed to move the phenomenal amounts of snow that have fallen on Turoa's slopes this season. "The Giant Chairlift drive station has been
raised to its maximum height by metres and still the Turoa staff have had to dig a metre of snow from under this lift." "The digger that was purchased this summer for rock-grooming projects has been put to good use digging out base buildings and the snow groomers have been spotted on the
mountain road clearing snow, so that vehicles can obtain access to the mountain." "Local accommodation establishments report excellent bookings through to the end of October which is a great indication of the enthusi-
asm for skiing this season," said Nancy. "People are keen to get on to the slopes and enjoy this year's record snowfalls," says Nancy van der Laan, "and we are looking forward to some great skiing in the weeks to come."
