Barrack Week for Boys

BY

JAN

SAVELL

Twenty five Gisborne Boys Cadet Unit school cadets visited the Army Training Group last week. The boys were at Waiouru for a 'barrack week' instead of their normal training at home. "The fund raising was a lot of work but it has been really worthwhile," said Capt Alan McNabb, one of the officers accompanying the school cadets. At each of the Army Schools the boys visited they were encouraged to ask questions and where ever possible they "had a go". Their visit included physical training on the confidence course and a live shoot with Steyr rifles. The Unit was re-estab-lished in 1985 after 20 years in recess. Capt McNabb believes the personal discipline taught through militaiy training is an important factor in turning around potential troublemakers. "I've seen borderline kids develop into good students" he said. The boys range in age from 13 to 16 and many of them plan to join the Army when they leave school.
