Ruapehu to host 13th college ski races

Ruapehu College are again hosting an invitation skiing competition for secondary schools, which will be the 13th year the competition has been held. At the closing date for entries for the event, to be held at Whakapapa, 111 teams had entered. Race Co-ordinator, John Laurenson, said there are another 10 provisional entries likely to be confirmed early this week and if previous years are anything to go by there will be a few late entries with 'hard luck stories'. It is likely that last year's total of 119 team entries will be passed. For the first time a South Island school has taken up the invitation, with Nayland College of Nelson being one of the early entries. With over 600 competitors the event is firmly entrenched as one of the largest skiing events held in New Zealand. Competition is fierce between some schools with several thousand dollars worth of ski equipment in prizes Dates for this year are Monday 21 September through to Wednesday 23 September and the venue is again in the Valley T Bar area on Whakapapa Ski Field.
