Job club a winner for most
By Marnie Woodd An innovative job seeking programme being run by the local New Zealand Employment Service is having great success at finding people jobs. The programme is called Job Club and this year 15 of its 17 partici-
pants have found themselves jobs. The two-week course is run once a year before the ski season and focuses on seasonal work and tourism. Jan Lawton, NZES Officer for Ohakune said the aim of the course was to help local people compete in the marketplace. "People from outside the Waimarino area have a wider range of experience by virtue of the fact that they live in larger centres," she said. The course also worked on building confidence. A group of employers talked to the Club and the
students had to give a short talk advertising their skills. "Some of the students found that really hard but the employers were very impressed," Mrs Lawton said. The majority of people on the course were women and apart from
one person from Taihape and two from Waiouru, the rest were local. Six people gained jobs at Turoa Ski Resort, three found employment in the catering industry, two got jobs as receptionists, one is now a ski mechanic, and another a garage attendant.
Two people went on to further training and two didn't complete the course. The Job Club met for eight days during the two weeks in April in rooms at the Ohakune Lions Club, who have lent space to the group for the past two years.
