Night patrols to beat Raetihi crime
Volunteer night patrols have begun in Raetihi, in an attempt to halt the continuing petty crime problem in the town. Constable Stewart Ngati has organised a team of 28 patrollers into a roster to cover random nights. Two volunteers will patrol the town together. The volunteers are not a vigilante group, organisers stress. "We've been instructed not to be heroes," said one patroller. "If we see any-
thing suspicious we take note, call the police and wait." While there is enthusiastic support for the night patrol, organisers are still keen to see more join the group. The aim is to keep an eye on local business premises which have often been the target of petty burglaries, break-ins and vandalism. Such patrols have worked well in similar towns to Raetihi, said organisers, reducing the crime rate.
