Tasting Ohakune's new water is project engineer Peter Johnson from Water Treatment Systems Technologies, Ohakune's water man Ben Goddard and Ruapehu Mayor Garrick Workman. The plant was officially opened on Saturday, 20 years after the need for treatment of the supply was first identified. The plant uses state-of-the-art water treatment technology, which means the bugs and turbidity are taken out but no chlorine or disinfectant chemicals are added. Filtration takes care of more than 98 per cent of the bugs and other material, while an ultra-violet light chamber finishes off the remaining two per cent. Mr Goddard was particularly pleased to be tasting the crystal clear water as he fought long and hard for the UV system, to keep Ohakune's water chemical-free. While the water is now treated, council engineers still advise consumers to boil their drinking water as it may take some time to flush the town's
