In the past three months Ruapehu Rural Education Activities Programme Inc (REAP) have approved funding of $13,500 to local community groups through the REAP Assisted Projects (RAP) Scheme. Twelve thousand eight hundred of this has been to primary schools in the Ruapehu region although the RAP fund is available to all individuals or community groups. Manager for REAP, Marion Cleaver said she hopes that as the scheme becomes better known applications will be received from a wider range of interests. The first application received was for a 'Bringing Puppets to Life' workshop for parents and teachers in early childhood centres . Other approved projects in clude an Art Day for Taihape Primary, school trip for Orautoha school, Tikanga Maori pro-
gramme for Raetihi School and a qualified tutor to help with the establishment of a school choir. The rationale for RAP is to provide assistance
for projects and programmes aimed at improving or enhancing the learning opportunities for rural students and/or rural groups. Applications are considered
on the relevance of the programme, taking into account the needs of the area. A panel of three REAP representatives meet fortnightly to consider applications. They
do not necessarily allocate the full amount applied for. More information and application forms are available from the REAP offices in Taihape.
