Stolen monorail?

• Never say never, I say. But I would hazard a guess and say Taihape's marvellous monorail to Turoa idea will be a very, very, very long, long time coming (don't buy your tickets yet!). Why would 1200 people (3 times 400 as suggested by Taihape's Mr Graham Pearcy) want to stay in Taihape for their ski holiday when they can barely see Ruapehu. When they can, and do, make use of the thousands of accommodation beds already available in Ohakune, Raetihi, National Park and Waiouru? Sure, things might change in 50 years time - like there could be several thousand more tourist beds available. But hang on - great ideas often come from preposterous ones - why not build a monorail from Ohakune to Turoa? At 16 kilometres it's much more feasible. And it would solve the Ohakune Mountain Road traffic problems, Turoa's parking problems, automobile pollution problems, as well as provide a tourist attraction in itself. Imagine it - a monorail up on stilts above the magnificent Tongariro National Park forests, with loads of visitors taking the trip to see not only the snow but the forest below and views all around. Now that sounds more like it!! When do we start?
