Fat-chance compromise

A compromise has been found by the Whanganui Taranaki Conservation Board over hunters 's use of horses and motorbikes on the Mangapurua Valley track. If the Ruapehu District Council pays, hunters will be able to use horses and two-wheel bikes on the track. That's the recommendation of the board. But the council has no cash for such things (as the board was told at their meeting earlier this month - where they promised to seek their compromise). The council has little enough money to seal their own roads in the Waimarino, without spending money on DoC's roads. Is the board now going to congratulate themselves on how fair they have been? They have offered the hunters a compromise that they not only have no control over, but has about as much chance of succeeding as a possum becoming the mascot for Whanganui National Park.
