Carys wins at body building
Ohakune's successful gymnast Carys Hubbard is on the way to the top of another sport, having won the North Island junior women's body building title this month. Carys' win represents 18 months' work in the gym, training four hours a day, four days on, one day off. The 17 year old switched to body building after finishing her gymnastics career about two years ago. She began weight training as part of her injury-pre-vention work for gymnastics. Her aim for this year is to win the national title, to be contested in October this year. Later she hopes to compete internationally. Carys is currently studying for a certificate in sports studies at Waikato Polytechnic. The two-year course on sports, fitness and leisure is difficult to get into, with all participants top athletes in various fields. Four are competing at this year's Olympics in Barcelona. Carys hopes to continue into a three-year diploma course, then into a bachelor of leisure studies course, which is currently planned for Waikato. The build up to the body building event, which was shown on Television Three on Friday night, included four days of training every five days, with two hours of weight training each day, and two hours of aerobic training to burn off body fat. But diet is the most important part of the
build up. Carys followed a strict diet for 16 weeks leading up to the event, mainly consisting of rice, pasta, potatoes and
boiled chicken. In February she was 58 kilograms and by 13 June she was 46 kilograms.
