Fashion on Waiouru catwalk
Waiouru reverberated to the sound of high heels as residents took to the cat-walk in a special fashion show last Wednesday night.
On display were 35 gafments suitable for evening wear ranging from formal ballgowns to short cocktail dresses. In the final section of the
show bridal wear was modelled. With the exception of the designer Lorna Ellington, all involved were locals. The models, Rowena Windleburn, Marie Atkinson, Dorothy Taylor, Christobel Laracy, Andrea Barnes were escorted by Major Peter Pitts, Sgt Dave De Lautour, Lcpl Bemie Moore and Mr Peter Clark. The show was compered by Rochelle Owens and choreographed by Christobel Laracy. Held in the Sportsman Complex, the show went smoothly with models and their escorts looking like they'd been on the cat-walk all their life. The fashion show was
organised to display the range of "Nadaleigh Exclusives" designer wear now available for hire in Waiouru. Elaine Sutherland convinced Lorna and seamstress Rowena Windleburn to join with her and provide a range of high fashion garments for women. "I saw a need for affordable evening wear. Soldier's wives go to formal functions at the Messes but don't want to buy a balldress to wear only once. Our range are all one-off designer garments but we are pricing for one-income families." New designs are already on the drawing board and Elaine expects to rotate stock as designs 'date'.
