Safe kids classes in Raetihi

A programme called 'Keeping Ourselves Safe' is being run at the Raetihi School at present. The programme, run by teacher Collette Taylor, aims to provide children with the skills to cope with situations that might involve abuse. It has been developed by the police and the education department in response to the increased awareness of the need to help children protect themselves.

Children leam safe practices for when they meet other people; and those already suffering abuse are encouraged to seek help. Another aim of the programme is to contribute to community prevention by increasing parent and teacher awareness of the need to help children avoid abuse. All classes will be taking part in the programme over the next few weeks.

Maori language Last year Kay McLean was the key teacher for introducing the Tihei Mauriora document to junior section of the school. The document is the syllabus that sets out a programme in the Maori language as part of the curriculum of New Zealand primary schools. It aims to enable children to learn and enjoy the Maori language. Principal Neil Hammond is to continue with the "excellent work" started by Mrs McLean, and have the programme developed for other classes. A number of teachers have expressed interest in the programme and Mr Hammond will be running beginner lessons as part of their training. "If there is enough interest I am also prepared

to run similar lessons for parents," said Mr Hammond. "This will

enable them to keep up with their children as they learn Maori."
