Historic signs
The Ruapehu District Council have decided to adopt a recommendation from the Wanganui Regional Committee of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, to mark historic sites throughout the District with a standard formalised plaque. Historic Places Trust representative Karen Ngatai will be recommending several places be designated as historic places within the District. Among those in the Southern Ward already being put forward are: Raetihi The Catholic Church; Old County Offices; Royal Theatre; Railway Station; the Bank of New
Zealand building together with the Hitching Rail outside. Ohakune The Ohakune Junction Railway Station; Kings Court Hotel. In speaking to the motion to recommend such plaques Cr Ellen Gould said there were many other places in and around Ohakune which might qualify for the historical classification. To have these plaques recognising and recording the township's development and early history would be interesting for residents and visitors alike. However, owners of all properties so designated as an 'Historic Place' by
Karen Ngatai would first be approached to seek permission for such a plaque to be placed on the property. The plaques would take the form of a rectangular metal plate etched or printed with the appropriate inscription mounted on a board measuring 12" x 8" (300 x 200mm) with a roof-like metal cover over the top and attached to either a 4" x 4" (100 x 100cm) or a round post set in the ground somewhere on the property.
