"Perfect" start to Whakapapa season
Ruapehu Alpine Lifts are pretty happy with their Happy Valley after a successful Queen's Birthday Weekend opening. Perfect weather greeted crowds of beginner skiers at Whakapapa on all three days, though there was some wind on Saturday morning. Saturday saw 500 tickets sold, with about 1000 on Sunday, and fairly quiet on Monday, with lots of first timers. The $600,000 snow making system was working flat out in the early hours of each day to cover the valley floor. The Centennial Chair and the Express Quad were operating for sightseeing.
