KC possum power cut help needed

Growing numbers of power cuts caused by possums have caused King Country Energy to experiment with different types of possum guards on power poles but with little success. Research into appropriate designs has included field trials - putting a possum at the bottom of a pole fitted with a prototype and letting it go. Chief engineer Colin Martin told the May board meeting that some guards did the job quite well under normal circumstances, but if the

animal was frightened, it made no difference - somehow the possums got across. Often the animals would climb up the pole stay wire, or even leap onto the pole from nearby trees. Mr Martin said a design based in the style of a Chinese coolie hat proved it could defeat the possums - but not the wind. Director Bill Peach suggested the problem would make a worthy competition idea, based on using materials like recycled plastics.
