Snow problem for Waiouru

Topics discussed atj this month's Waiouru j Community Board meeting were: • The reasons for the extended hours of the powercut to Waiouru and the surrounding area. A letter was to be sent to, the power authorities requesting an explanation. • The need for roads in the Waiouru township1 to be cleared duringi heavy snowfall. This problem was emphasised early this month during a heavy snow fall. The Ruapehu District Council had the contract for clearing roads in the area and the Mayor, Garrick Workman, said he will support the request and would refer the matter to the District Covmcil. Mr Vine said Waiouru Defence housing area had a grader clearing the roads at midnight, then again at 5am, during the storm and although under a different contract, there should be no reason why the

township should noti also be done. • A pedestrian crossing over State Highway One. Mr Vine said approval for this would be unlikely, but the community board hopes to install caution traffic signs to indicate children may be crossing in the area. He said there are quite a few school children who have to cross State Highway One. • The community board is keen to see some improvements to the Irirangi turn-off on State Highway One. The Ruapehu District Council's works department and Transit New Zealand will be contacted in the hope of some funding for the project. Mr Vine said farmers and residents in the Navy houses are affected by the bad corner and felt the road needs extra width and to be brought back into line. • A possum control programme will start in Waiouru training area,

on 22 June or soonj thereafter. Mr Vine saidj this will not concern the' public unless they go into the affected area and a note of caution will be written on the permits. A controlled pesticidef will be applied by heli-, copter in a green dyedl pellet bait form. Both baits and carcases are toxic and the affected areas are Zone 31 Holloway Bush and. Mitchell Bush, Zone 25 Hassett Wood, Zone 28 Westlawn Bush and Zone 27 Atawhitiki Bush.
