Kitchen visit
Nine people from the Whakatane Salvation Army Employment Programme visited the Waiouru Catering Wing recently to observe army catering. The group are near completing a 16 week course, covering topics such as food preparation and buying, kitchen hygiene, garnishing, care of utensils, catering for the public and visiting local hotels. "I am very grateful the army has given us the time. The army kitchens are excellent, the soldiers are friendly and very helpful," group leader Emma Ranapia
said. She said this is the first time the course has visited the army kitchens and think some may want to join the army. "It's such a competitive trade. We used to find placements in the work force for our people on the programme, but in today's economy it's become very difficult." Lieutenant Barbara Smith said she thought the visit was worthwhile and would be happy to host future visits. She said the group particularly enjoyed the practical experience.
