Promotion grants

At last week's RDC meeting submissions were received for the allocation of funds for District promotion in the Draft Annual Plan for the 1992/93 financial year. The council's Promotion and Development Subcommittee has requested a sum of $168,500 to fund the following organisations and projects.: Taumarunui Development Incorpor ated ; ProT aum and Ruapehu South Business Association; The Ski Ruapehu marketing campaign; The National Park information signage; funding of

a marketing manager. A submission was also received from the Waimarino Community Board for a grant of $38,000 to be made to Main Trunk Rail Ohakune (MTRO) Incorporated to assist in the Ohakune railway muRaetihi safety mowing Mowing grass verges in Alexandra Road in Raetihi came in for particular attention at the council table last Friday. Mayor Garrick Workman explained that the road on the southern boundary of the township had recently seen several new residential properties being developed, which meant more children in the area would be walking to and from school. Because there was no footpath children walk on the road rather than on the long, sometimes wet, grass verge. At present a concrete footpath, requested by residents is out of the question because of costs and a gravel footpath would not be satisfactory on the terrain, the council heard. Instead it was decided to mow a strip beside the road to encourage the children to walk on it rather than on the road. Hospital roads changed The entrance and exit to the Waimarino Rural Health Centre (hospital) have been swapped around. Delivery trucks found the old entrance road too steep and difficult to negotiate. The changes have been well signposted so staff are hoping that visitors will handle the new system easily.

seum and locomotive projects. Mayor Workman said it was commendable to see a community prepared to get behind the Ohakune railway development project. "A lot has already been achieved and we should assist them as far as possible because, once in place, it will bring extra people to the whole district from both north and south," he said. In agreeing with the mayor that this was a commendable effort and that MTRO should be congratulated, Cr. Lawson did however express concern that other similar organisations should not consider the RDC as "a soft touch" by jumping on the bandwagon. "We're ready when steam is" Plans for the expected vintage train excursion from Steam Incorpor ated Paekakariki at Queens Birthday weekend were finalised at the meeting of the Main Trunk Rail Ohakune (MTRO) committee last week. Accommodation, meals and transport have been arranged with local hotels, motels, restaurants and tour operators for up to 170 passengers expected, should the excursion take place. This will depend on Steam Incorporated Paekakariki attracting sufficient numbers of passengers for the weekend excursion which would see them spending two nights in Ohakune. Steam Inc is to make the decision next week but, as far as MTRO is concerned, all the preparations have been made to welcome and host the visitors.
