Alex Weir wa s notified by letter on 19 December 1991 that he had been awarded the Queens Fire Service Medal, but was unable to tell anyone until it was published in the newspapers at New Year. Alex said he was very surprised and that it took about two months before he could believe it. Alex's wife Nita travelled with him to Government House in Wellington on 8 May where he was presented with the medal by the Govemor General Dame Cath Tizard. Included in
the many letters and cards of congratulations he received is a letter from B.S. Armstrong, chief executive national commissioner of fire service, members of parliament, mayors of both the Ruapehu District Council and Wanganui Gity Council, family and personal friends and from the Hampshire Fire Brigade in England. Alex, who has been in the fire brigade 35 years, has been fire chief since 1984, is dedicated to the importance and responsibility of his position and spends many of his leisure hours at the fire station checking book work and equipment. Other awards Alex has from the fire service include a gold star for 25 years' service, five two year service bars, long service and good conduct medal and a life honorary member medal.
