More KCE power sold
King Country Energy added more than seven gigawatt hours (GWhrs) of load during the last financial year, thanks
mainly to colder weather. A great ski season and electrification of the Turoa skifield saw unit
saies to ski lifts and huts rise by 2.2 GWhrs - up 56 percent on the amount of electricity sold to this sector in the previous year. General manager Peter Till told the April board meeting that the use of unboosted night rate power has risen over the year by a staggering 328%, while boosted night rate saies had risen
27%. Off peak unit saies had risen 36%. More than a gigawatt hour has been switched to off peak or night rate supply. "The marketing effort can take some credit for the night rate and off peak saies incorporated in the increase," Mr Till said. Farm electricity saies were up 11% on the pre-
vious year, while unit saies to restaurants had risen nine percent. Prisons used 16% more power than in 1990-91 and schools' consumption was boosted by 20%, thanks mainly to the Taumarunui High School heated pool. In contrast, increased efficiencies in the food processing sector has seen unit saies in that area drop 15%, while the failure of a gravel crushing operation during the year had seen unit saies for this sector fall by 22%.
