Births, deaths & marriages to return

People in Raetihi, Ohakune and Waiouru will be able to register and obtain certificates of births deaths and marriages from the Ruapehu District Council from Monday 4 May. New Zealand Post Limited was the agent for the registers until 1991 when the Taihape District Court took over. Ruapehu District Council Mayor Garrick Workman took the matter up with the Regis-trar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages with a view to the District Council taking over from the Court. Mr Workman said he is happy to see an essential service retained in the Waimarino and being the agent for the

registers is consistent with Council's aim to provide services which meet the needs of its residents. "It means that Council provides our residents with a service that had been relocated to the Taihape District Court," Mr Workman said. Department of Justice Deputy Registrar-Gen-eral of Births, Deaths and Marriages John Rowland endorsed Mr Workman' s comments saying the transfer of services will strengthen the Council's association with its communities. Births, deaths and marriages records will be located at the Council office at 15 Miro Street, Ohakune. Sue King will be Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
