Hunters out in force for Easter
If the prize of the catch or from their hunt is not enough, hunters and anglers can vie for the top trophies in the third annual Winstone International Easter Hunt this week. $5200 in prizes is up for grabs in the competition. The weigh-in for the hunt is on Easter Monday afternoon, when prizes will be awarded for the heaviest stag, trout and boar, and for the team with the best ~ total. New this year are prizes for the heaviest fallow deer and the best fallow deer head. This weigh-in, held behind the Ohakune Hotel, always draws a crowd, who provide an obstacle course for hunters to carry in their game. The deer and pig categories for the event are open to all areas of the North Island, but the trout must be caught in the Rotorua/Taupo licence area or local streams. Prizes will be awarded to children also, for the heaviest possum, rabbit and eel.
