Thefts lead to Karioi Forest closure

Karioi Forest has been closed to recreational hunters until further notice, thanks to the actions of thieves. Some time between Friday night and yesterday morning, thieves stole a number of items from a bulldozer and skidder parked in the forest. The items included a German-made hour clock worth $1100, a stainless steel fire extinguisher ($300), and a pair a pair of skidder lights ($500). Waimarino constable Stuart Ngatai said diesel had also been stolen from the machines over recent weeks. Winstone Forests representative Shane Harvey said as a result of the thefts the company had to close the forest until further notice.
