Waiouru beats Ohakune in first '92 rugby

BY

JO

HOWIE

An under strength Waiouru senior rugby team b e a t Ohakune/Karioi in the last minutes of the game by 7-6, played in Waiouru on Saturday. A large scale army exercise denied Waiouru its

first line up. The first half was all Ohakune who were quick to capitalise from the many mistakes by Waiouru. Two penalties to L Harding saw Ohakune lead 6-0 at half time. In the second half Waiouru stuck to the

task and managed to peg back the difference with a try to new club player Dave Shaw (formerly of Taihape Pirates). A penalty in the closing stages to Waiouru allowed them to capture the game. For Waiouru, the forwards Dave Shaw, and Ralph Wallace stood

out and half back Dempsey used his experience to good effect. Jim Ward playing on the wing was not entirely out of position. The game was played in cold wet conditions, making it difficult for both teams to play well.
