Karioi dump needs work

Karioi's dump may be in line to receive a much-needed upgrade. The Waimarino Community Board last week recommendated to the Ruapehu District Council to spend an estimated $11,900 on maintenance of the dump next year. Around $1200 is
needed for fencing to contain rubbish deposits. Board members heard that up until this year all work carried out on Karioi's landfill site had been charged to the Ohakune tip, the expenses paid out of Council's general funds. The Karioi dump received no separate allo-
cation of funds for maintenance work, resulting in overcharging of the Ohakune tip account. Technical services director Bruce Dobson, told the board that closing the Karioi dump would possibly mean spending much more money on installing and Turn page 5

From page 2 maintaining a rubbish receiving station. If instead Karioi users were forced to use the Ohakune dump it may mean more money needed for its upkeep. Mayor Garrick Workman told the board he had been surprised by the high public use of the Karioi dump.
