Dumps revamp soon
Management plans for Ruapehu's rubbish dumps are to be prepared by later this year, with the plans based on the existing situations "with some variation as necessary to control storm water and minimize leachate discharge" The Ruapehu District Council received a report on the district' s refuse disposal at their last meeting. The plans will consider future options for the landfills as "there is likely to be increased pressure from the Regional Council to improve the landfills operation." The report said most methods of recycling could not be justified on purely economic terms but said "recycling would however increase the life of our landfills
which are rapidly approaching their capacity." The report said however, that it was "considered best" to wait for regional council policies and recommendations on recycling. Works necessary to
meet water right conditions would be necessary at some dumps, the cost of which would be included in the council budget for 1992-93. The biggest problem with discharge permits was the interception of leachate before it filters into the ground water
and pollutes water courses. Regional Council director of planning and environment said reasonable access to dumps was necessary otherwise a problem of illegal tipping would be created.
